The "Maybe True" Story of Louie Spray 12:20 – If you've never seen or caught a musky think of a northern pike on steroids, only bigger, badder, and far less common. They were called the fish of a thousand casts by the old time musky hunters, and that very elusiveness is what has made them one of the most coveted and contested catches in the record books. The photos above are of the three biggest muskies ever caught on conventional fishing tackle. Which one was actually the largest has been hotly debated for decades and will certainly never be unanimously agreed upon. Left to right: Cal Johnson with 67-pound, 8-ounce fish caught July 24, 1949; Louie Spray with 69-pound, 11-ounce fish caught October 20, 1949; Art Lawton with 69-pound, 15-ounce fish caught September 22, 1957. Although all three fish are cloaked in controversy, Spray's fish is currently recognized as the official world record, but only by one of the two governing organizations. Listen to his story as related by modern-day musky-on-the-fly hunter Brad Bohen of Musky Country Outfitters, narration includes excepts and references from the publications of John Dettloff, Larry Ramsell, the World Record Musky Alliance, OutdoorLife.com and others. Background music is When the Wind Comes Home by Warren Nelson. And if you want to SEE what this is all about watch for our Wild On The Fly television episode Musky Madness premiering February 5, 2011 on the Outdoor Channel.
