Fully-outfitted, guided and unguided multi-day float trips on the legendary trout rivers of the Bristol Bay watershed. Fantastic wilderness camping experience with incredible fishing, wildlife (yes, bears!) and scenery. This is a very inexpensive way for intrepid fly rodders to experience the best of Alaskan angling. Professionally staged out of Rainbow River Lodge, these are extremely popular trips and dates sell out quickly. Price varies on length of time and level of support.
Float trips at Rainbow River Lodge usually begin on a Sunday and end on Saturday, although that is not a requirement. In any case, you must fly to Anchorage from your home city the day before. After spending that night in Anchorage, you will take a cab to the Iliamna Air Taxi office (907-571-1248) located at Merrill Field Airport in the Signature Flight Support Hangar at 3600 Old International Airport Road. Your charter flight to Iliamna usually leaves Anchorage at about 8:00am, so be sure to arrive at least 45 minutes earlier for check-in. Luggage is limited to 70-pounds per person. Your flight will be reserved by the lodge in advance but you must pay for your ticket there at the airport (approx. $400 roundtrip). Flying time to Iliamna is about 45 minutes and is extremely scenic, particularly through Lake Clark Pass. At Iliamna your plane will be met by a RRL pilot, who will fly you by floatplane to the lodge (about 30 minutes away) to repack your gear in waterproof bags. You will then be flown out to the put-in location of your float. On your last day you will be picked up on the river early by floatplane and flown back to the lodge to repack, after which you will be flown on to Iliamna. Your return flight to Anchorage usually leaves Iliamna about 1:30 pm arriving in time to transfer to the Ted Stevens International Airport and for flights leaving Alaska any time after 4:00pm.
