San Felipe is a not-yet -tourist-tarnished fishing village on the northern tip of Yucatan where you'll find incredible baby tarpon action year-round, and larger fish in the summer. Mainly sight-fishing from boats using 10-wt rods and floating lines. Can be challenging in dense mangroves. Tarpon Cay Lodge (local hotel) provides comfortable accommodations, hearty meals with a local flavor. Great guides with adequate English skills. Outfitter and manager at hotel excellent.
Baby tarpon will take many types of traditional tarpon and general saltwater streamers, and just a few innovative surface flies, but after several years of testing just about everything in our boat bags at San Felipe two patterns stood out dramatically. In fact, if you only brought these two flies (don't do it, that's just the Cazadores talking!) to the Rio Lagatos Estuary you would spank 'em! But it's honestly what we ended up using the most during 50 angler days of testing over three seasons. And because one fly floats and the other swims with near nuetral-density in shallow water, you're totally covered for changing conditions.
