La Paz has been on the fishing map since the 1940s when it was literally an outpost of Mexico as it was difficult to reach by car as most roads in Baja were still dirt. The few Americans that made it down there did so by boat or private plane.
Today it’s easily reached by both motor vehicle or commercial airlines, but even so, La Paz still maintains that small fishing village feel that first drew the early tourists fifty years ago. La Paz Mexico has that special combination of old Mexico charm with modern accommodations.
We at Wild On The Fly have never found any other location with such a mix of consistently good fishing, genuine and friendly locals, beautiful weather, and great restaurants and hotels. Though La Paz and the lower half of Baja draws tourists for a variety of recreational pursuits, saltwater sport fishing is still remains one of the most popular activities, as the waters of the gulf are home to arguably the greatest variety of sport fish of any other destination in the world.
Of the many options that are available to the saltwater fly fisherman we at Wild on The Fly have found that the best fishing program is provided by Baja Pirates, who offer the most complete packages for the money, that include lodging at the Marina Hotel (which happens to be located near the downtown restaurants and shops), boats, transfers, boats (size to fit the size of your party), fishing gear if needed, and breakfast/lunch, fishing license etc.
By booking a package through Baja Pirates, you don’t have to worry about important details that you my encounter in a foreign country, which is particularly helpful for those who are new to travel outside of the US. The Baja Pirates know fishing and have learned over the years the needs of fly fishermen who travel to Baja each year.
