Christmas Island

Destination Overview

When Captain Cook laid eyes on Karitimati (Christmas Island) in the South Pacific on December 24, 1777  he had no way to for-see that in 167 years it would be the location of one of the major battles of World War II.  He also had no way to know that it would eventually become one of the most exotic fishing resorts in the world.

Imagine a fly fishing resort located right in the middle of an aquarium that’s filled with saltwater gamefish, and Villages of Christmas Island is it.  Once we at Wild On The Fly became aware of this amazing destination we knew that it would have to be included in our catalog of great world class resorts that we could offer to our clients.

Kiritimati (Christmas Island) Island is a fisherman’s paradise. Situated 1,200km South of Honolulu in the Central Pacific, just north of equator, Kiritimati is the largest coral atoll on the planet where the sea and sky provide a backdrop to 250 square miles of white sand, crystal clear aqua hued lagoons, coconut palms and flats that go on forever.

First opened in June of 2006, "The Villages of Christmas Island" has quickly become renowned as the best location and best all-around fishing program on the island. The Villages is nestled among the palm trees overlooking the waters of the atoll’s lagoon.  It is only a short ten minute boat ride to the shallow easily waded flats teeming with Bonefish and other exotic tropical game fish. Imagine literally taking a few steps out of the door of your room, hoping into a skiff and within a few minutes be wading the flats stalking Bonefish.

The Fishing

Christmas Island’s location about 1,200 miles south of Hawaii and only just north of the Equator means that its warm temperatures and weather is constant throughout the year, and so is the fishing.  There is no bad time of the year to fish Christmas Island.

Each day, the head guide will schedule the fishing itineraries based on weather, tide etc. after which anglers will meet with their personal guide and set off for the day’s adventure. Christmas Island sits in the middle of the largest coral and  sand flats in the world so the lodge’s 12 to 14 anglers can easily have miles of flats to themselves.

You will have lunch on the boat so that you can maximize your time on the water.  Soft drinks, water and beer will be available in addition to the food you will bring from each day’s lunch buffet at the lodge.

About 6 PM you and your guide will return you to the lodge for drinks followed by a sumptuous meal at about 7:00 PM.

Accommodations

Nestled among the palms at the water’s edge are eight bungalows, each with two twin size beds that accommodate twelve to fourteen guests.  Each has a private bath with shower and hot and cold water and a porch with a view of the beach.  In between the bungalows is a lounge and dining area where you will enjoy the wonderful meals created by the lodge’s chefs.  You will have the opportunity to enjoy both local south pacific favorites and also American style meals.  The bar is stocked with liquor, beer, wine and soft drinks, which will be charged to your bill which you will pay on the last day of your visit.

On Site Amenities and Activities Include

  • Laundry (extra charge)

  • Bar (no host)

  • Gourmet Food

  • Non fly fishing activities: scuba diving and snorkeling

The accommodations are basic but very comfortable.  Remember, you are on one of the most remote islands  in the world so it’s good to keep in mind that air conditioning, great food, refrigerators and great fishing is by any definition, a luxury.

Getting There

The main hub through which northern hemisphere guests fly in to is Honolulu, Hawaii.  From Honolulu you can get a flight from there to Christmas Island each Tuesday (Wednesday) and then return on the following Tuesday (Wednesday).

Once you arrive at Christmas Island a staff member from the Villages will meet you and transfer you to the lodge.  There you will settle in to your bungalow and meet the head guide who will explain the fishing program.
