Destination Overview

Poronui is located in the secluded Taharua Valley on the North Island of New Zealand.  There you will experience, unbelievable scenery and warm hospitality and it is arguably the largest lodge facility of any in New Zealand. Situated on a 16,000 ranch, it started as a rustic fishing camp and has evolved into a luxury fishing lodge of world class stature.

Being surrounded by vast acres of untouched Maori (indigenous people) estates enhances the feeling of remoteness, which makes the first class experience of residing at the lodge even more poignant. Fishing Program

If you love being surrounded by spectacular scenery and casting a dry fly over a big, wild trout in a crystal clear stream, Poronui’s guides can provide that experience for their clients every day, whether by 4WD or helicopter helicopter fly out. Lake fishing by private charter boat on Lake Taupo is also available.

For an ultimate fly fishing Experience A helicopter flight deep into the mountains will uncover some of the most legendary and challenging fly fishing in the World.

New Zealand angling can be technically difficult - demanding stealth, knowledge of the current, and an accurate cast. These are trophy waters where huge trout cautiously cruise in deep clear pools. These fish can be challenging! But when it all comes together aided by the expert coaching of your guide, the reward is likely to be the catch of a lifetime.

We recommend you take advantage of the heli-fishing program which provides easy access to many of New Zealand's most famous mountain rivers and more remote streams only a short flight away. The flight itself is the ultimate exhilarating experience.

The lodge’s  fishing guides are members of the New Zealand Professional Fishing Guides Association and are consummate professionals - passionate about the outdoors, and share an intimate knowledge of the rivers and streams and where to find the best trout.  All of the guides operate 4WD vehicles. The easily accessible waters on the property offer an opportunity for the classic fly fishing experience of stalking and sight casting to browns and rainbows in shallow, clear water.

For the more adventurous angler seeking a unique outdoor experience an overnight stay at one of the lodge’s streamside camps fills the ticket. Whether cosy in a mountain hut or sleeping under canvas the experience of a star-littered sky above, the crackling of the campfire, the taste of bush brewed coffee and the sound of nearby flowing water - holding the promise of tomorrow - is unbeatable
